Transforming an industrial landscape for biodiversity
Our habitat management team have been working with North Wales Wildlife Trust’s corporate partners, Enfinium, to manage grassland, in an ecologically sensitive way, within a large industrial landscape at their 20-acre waste processing facility on the Deeside Industrial Estate.
The management team at Enfinium were keen to improve biodiversity on site as part of their commintment to corporate social responsibility (CSR). In 2023, they entered into partnership with North Wales Wildlife Trust (NWWT) and Enfys Ecology to manage the space for biodiversity.
Work carried out
Formerly mown grass, 2.5 hectares of grassland is being managed for biodiversity, with two acres enhanced with the introduction of locally-sourced seeds and wildflower plug plants from nearby Sites of Specific Scientific Interest (SSSIs) and NWWT nature reserves.
1.5 acres of vegetation is left uncut annually to provide overwintering habitat for a wide range of species. 0.25 hectare of ponds/wetlands are managed for structural diversity and to create basking sites for invertebrates and reptile populations. We have also created 800m2 of open mosaic habitat including numerous hibernacula, seasonally wet scrapes and diverse vegetation.
The outcome
This has resulted in improved on-site biodiversity, including the emergence of bee orchids within species-rich grassland on site.
Monitoring by an external ecological consultancy (SLR Consulting) reported that management to date has increased the total biodiversity units by 25.79% since 2022.
The site was awarded 2024/25 Bionet Business Award for Contribution to Biodiversity.
I’ve had the pleasure of working with Enfys Ecology for the past two years, and their performance has been outstanding. They’ve demonstrated a strong commitment to both the ecological health of our site and the efficiency of their work. Their team has been exceptional in maintaining our industrial site's ecological habitats, ensuring the preservation of native plants, wildlife, and overall biodiversity.Enfinium
